CeBRA was established in 2000 as a coordination platform for two multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional research projects about ethical questions and risk assessment related to gene technology applied on plants, food and laboratory animals. After the completion of the two initial projects and following an evaluation, four institutions decided to continue their cooperation on ethics, risk issues and societal deliberations connected to biological research

CeBRA  has four owners, each of whom contributing financially to the general management of the centre. These are all public research institutions:

· Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences

· The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (where CeBRA's secretariat is based),

· Risoe National Laboratory

· University of Copenhagen.

CeBRA’s task is to perform and further interdisciplinary research in the crossroads of the humanities, social sciences and biology, in particular about ethics and risk issues in relation to scientifically produced biological knowledge and its applications, hereby also how those questions are handled by society.

CeBRA’s research concentrates on topics that are relevant to the owning institutions’ other research activities, and where cooperation across disciplinary and institutional barriers will strengthen the quality of the research.

In addition to the research tasks, CeBRA has a particular responsibilty of dissemination. The centre issues a newsletter in Danish - Bio-etik i Praksis - 5-6 times a year, and conferences, workshops and debate meetings are organised, aimed at bringing the scientific and academic worlds, public and private decision-makers, and the broader public together.
