About Urban Forestry

In today's urbanized society, urban forests and trees play a crucial role in keeping our cities livable. They provide high-quality living and working environments, recreation opportunities nearby and cleaner air and water. The planning, establishment and management of trees on forest, parks, gardens and street sites in high-pressure environments should be supported by innovative and interdisciplinary research.

In this context, EUFORIC aims to co-ordinate and facilitate urban forestry research and development.

Background Information on Urban Forestry

A definition of Urban Forestry:
Urban forestry is a relatively new, multidisciplinary approach in international forest research. It has been defined as "the art, science, and technology of managing trees and forest resources in and around urban community ecosystems for the physiological, sociological, economic and aesthetic benefits trees provide society" (Helms, J.A. (Ed.). 1998. The Dictionary of Forestry. Society of American Foresters).

Networking: To improve the international networking on urban forest research, a working group on urban forestry of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) has been established. At the European level, the European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) has been funding a network called COST Action E 12 "Urban Forests and Trees". Information about urban forestry can also be found at the sites of the International Society for Arboriculture (ISA) and of TreeLink.
